Developing Reading Comprehension Programme

Programme dates 2023-2024:

Day 1 – 27th September 2023
Day 2 – 22nd November 2023
Day 3 – 31st January 2024
Day 4 – 20th March 2024

Each day will begin at 9am with coffee from 8:30am.  Please sign in at the main office and you will be directed to the training room.  Parking is available beyond the school in front of the training rooms (demountable on the playground).  If the car park is full then there are few parking restrictions apart from in the immediate road outside the school, where there are double yellow lines.

Details of the programme:

  • 4 whole-day training sessions (1 per half term) from 9.00am to 4.00pm
  • Gap tasks between days 1/2, days 2/3 and days 3/4 and opportunities for delegates to share progress with these
  • Opportunities to observe teaching of reading comprehension with pupils

Day 1:

  • Focus on reading fluency, resilience and reading for pleasure
  • Quick and efficient assessment of fluency
  • Time to plan and share ideas to develop back in school

Day 2:

  • Focus on adapting practice to meet the needs of the lowest 20% of readers and prior knowledge
  • Quick and efficient assessment of comprehension
  • Sharing of practice and learning from what has been tried back in school
  • Time to identify strategies to develop back in school

Day 3:

  • Focus on vocabulary and reading for meaning in the moment
  • Sharing of practice and learning from what has been tried back in school
  • Time to identify strategies to develop back in school

Day 4:

  • Focus on inference and reading for meaning after the moment
  • Teaching sequence and lesson structure for developing reading comprehension
  • Assessing the fundamentals of reading for understanding
  • Sharing of practice and learning from what has been tried back in school
  • Action planning for continuing impact back in school 

Cost:

Cost: £240 per person for four-day programme (subscription to online platform Hive, lunch and refreshments included)
