Developing Reading Comprehension Programme

Each day will begin at 9am with coffee from 8:30am.  Please sign in at the main office and you will be directed to the training room.  Parking is available beyond the school in front of the training rooms (demountable on the playground).  If the car park is full then there are few parking restrictions apart from in the immediate road outside the school, where there are double yellow lines.

Details of the programme:

  • 4 whole-day training sessions (1 per half term) from 9.00am to 4.00pm
  • Gap tasks between days 1/2, days 2/3 and days 3/4 and opportunities for delegates to share progress with these
  • Opportunities to observe teaching of reading comprehension with pupils
  • Opportunity for action planning

Day 1:

  • Focus on reading fluency, resilience and reading for pleasure
  • Quick and efficient assessment of fluency
  • Time to plan and share ideas to develop back in school

Day 2:

  • Focus on reading for meaning in the moment, vocabulary and prior knowledge
  • Quick and efficient assessment of comprehension
  • Opportunity to work with children
  • Sharing of practice and learning from what has been tried back in school
  • Time to identify strategies to develop back in school

Day 3:

  • Focus on inference, predicting, summarising and identifying themes
  • Opportunity to observe the teaching of a reading comprehension skill
  • Sharing of practice and learning from what has been tried back in school
  • Time to identify strategies to develop back in school

Day 4:

  • Further focus on reading comprehension skills
  • Teaching sequence for developing reading comprehension
  • Opportunity to observe the teaching of a reading comprehension skill
  • Sharing of practice and learning from what has been tried back in school
  • Action planning for continuing impact back in school 

Cost:

Cost: £60 per teacher (Essex is funding the remainder). Ideally two teachers will attend from each school – the Literacy Co-ordinator and an upper KS2 teacher or Year 2 teacher
